Sarah Stein

Sarah Stein serves as Program Director for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s Second Chance Farm at Central Maryland Correctional Facility in Sykesville, Maryland. The Montgomery County, Maryland native grew up showing and foxhunting and has an extensive background in steeplechasing. As an assistant to trainer Ann Stewart, Sarah worked with Maryland Hunt Cup winners Swayo and Askim. She also spent several years as barn manager at the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club. Her professional experience as a drug counsellor serves her well in her work with inmates enrolled in the intensive program at the Sykesville facility.

“Sarah is a huge asset to the TRF Second Chances program and the horse community in general. She goes above and beyond for the men and horses in the program. I’ve had the pleasure of being part of the racetrack tour she organizes for her group of gentlemen and to tour the Second Chances farm myself. Luckily, I get to see firsthand the passion and creativity she brings when trying to change the lives of the participants she works with while educating them about a subject she loves…horses.”

         Jessica Hammond, Beyond The Wire

“Sarah’s depth of knowledge and experience in the horse industry is a great asset to the Second Chances program. She is passionate about everything she does, and her enthusiasm is infectious.”

Cricket Goodall, Maryland Horse Breeders Association

“Sarah’s passion, patience, and kindness are the main reasons I have volunteered at Second Chances Sykesville the past three years. She is able to treat inmates, people most of society rejects, as if they’re family. It’s amazing to see the respect those men have for her, and it speaks entirely to how she treats them. Not as “inmates”, but as people. Combine that with the care she has for her horses, and you have an absolute hero. We need a whole lot more Sarah Steins in our world!!!”

Chris Brown, TRF Second Chances volunteer

“Sarah has become a cornerstone in the lives of many of the participants. She instills humility, confidence, and a sence of caring that most of these men have never had in the past. “

Officer Rick Zambito, Central Maryland Correctional Facility

“Never in my life did I ever think I would want to spend my life taking care of horses, much less temperamental retired Thoroughbreds. Then again, I never thought I would go to prison either…..”
